Pressurized vs Non-Pressurized Portafilter Baskets

The image below depicts the inner and outer walls of 2 types of espresso portafilter baskets - pressurized and non-pressurized. Use this to identify what type of basket you have and therefore what grind option best suits your setup.

2 types of filter, 1 pressure, 1 non pressure, showing the inner and outer wall of each

A pressurized basket:

  • Has two walls. The inner wall has many holes, while the external wall has one tiny hole.
  • Builds pressure inside the basket, so there’s a consistent extraction.
  • Can make up for inconsistencies in the grind size with pressure.
  • Best used with coarser grounds.
  • Beginner-friendly.

A non-pressurized basket:

  • Only has one wall, with multiple holes.
  • The coffee puck builds pressure for consistent extraction.
  • Requires good puck preparation to pull a good espresso.
  • Has a learning curve.
  • Has better extraction control.
